RíOrganized: Desi Perkins Makeup Room

Man, oh man, have I been chomping at the bit to share this project with you guys! When YouTube makeup influencer/badass entrepreneur/hot momma (to-be at the time) Desi Perkins reaches out for help organizing her makeup—WE ARE THERE.

Desi was pregnant and nesting with little free time to get her makeup organized in the way she was hoping for. I stopped by for a consultation to assess what we were working with and give my game plan for creating the space she deserved.

Here are 5 things we did to completely transform Desi Perkins’ makeup room.

1. FIX THE FOUNDATION

As many of you know, I am all about adding storage where it doesn’t exist. In this case, it was an ENTIRE WALL! The original setup was a desk (containing some makeup items), and a small walk-in closet. There were simply too many makeup products to comfortably fit and be functional in the existing space. Leave it to Ría to suggest a customized storage solution that would allow for a wall’s worth of storage to play with — enter, PAX from IKEA. We custom-designed the perfect wall unit for Desi with a mixture of the PAX Organization System and Alex Drawer Units.

Steven and Desi trusted the process and had the pieces delivered and installed ASAP. What a difference this first step made. We now had a foundation suitable for the organization that was about to go down!

2. CATEGORIZE THE CONTENTS

Applying makeup is a multi-step process consisting of all different types of categories. Categorizing is very important, and the way you categorize has a lot to do with your routine. For someone like Desi, who is a Lifestyle & Beauty Vlogger, there are a lot of components to the look she's going for on any given day — whether she’s rocking a casual day out or treating us to an epic one-of-a-kind makeup look.

Makeup is easy to put into the categories of face, lips, eyes, and brows — within those macro-categories is where you will find our micro-categories: primers, foundations, blushes, bronzers, lip liners, brow pencils, eyelashes, etc. When all like-items are together, it makes finding, maintaining, and replacing supplies that much easier.

3. SPACE PLAN FOR SUCCESS

Makeup is all about the process, the steps, and the order in which you take those steps. Our goal is to set up a makeup space based on the order our clients will be using their products. We want to create a flow for them to be able to maintain their makeup routine.  Once the wall was complete and the categories were established, we planned the space from left to right to provide Desi with a system that would work for her daily needs. In a large space like this, we were able to spread things out and give each category a distinct home. We utilized the walk-in closet for backstock, overflow, and occasional-use products.

Ya’ll know we love us some blue tape for everything space planning — it’s the perfect tool to visualize the plan without damaging surfaces!

4. PRODUCT MATTERS

(Don’t worry- all products linked below!)

Here at RíOrganize, we are big fans of the Onyx Makeup Organizers, alongside some other Amazon favorites. It’s not always what product you're getting,  but how you are using them. In this project, our team had the opportunity to focus on both aesthetics and functionality. Displaying Desi’s epic makeup collection was only the cherry on top after creating a routine-ready space for her to double as her filming backdrop. Her makeup items had more room to breathe, making the space look bigger while creating visibility and accessibility to her go-to’s.

Once we knew where each category was going to live, these products are what helped us elevate and maximize each space.

5. DISPLAY THE PRETTIES

Display what matters. Obviously, every product and makeup item was placed with care in both her makeup room and walk-in closet, but the most fun the team had was highlighting Desi’s accomplishments, whether personal or collaborative. These are reminders of all of her hard work and where she’s been!
