4 Quick Tips to Level-Up Your Laundry Room

Does anyone else feel like clothes MAGICALLY MULTIPLY when it’s laundry time, or is it just me? With 3 kids, our laundry can pile up quickly and can feel pretty overwhelming. No matter the size of the space, creating a system for your laundry needs is essential to saving time (and sanity), utilizing space, and streamlining your laundry tasks.

If you’re working out of a cramped, unorganized space, trying to get a week’s worth of laundry done for who knows how many people, it’s time to consider getting yourself RíOrganized!

These 4 tips will give you an idea of where to begin and hopefully kickstart your motivation to get it done.

1. GROUP THE GOODS

Laundry rooms can store a variety of items—cleaning products, specialty cleaners, pet supplies, utility items, stain removers, and so on. The easiest solution for making sense of your inventory is to first group items by category (these can be macro like “laundry” and “cleaning” or micro like “light bulbs” and “detergents”).

2. BIN THOSE BAD BOYS

Next up, bin those bad boys. Clear bins are a great option and help you visualize the items you have and not lose track of anything. Sustainable Nordic baskets are another great option to separate your categories. Having bins that are easy to clean, as well, is VITAL in a laundry space, as these products are often the ones that spill, leak, explode, or end up leaving weird rings wherever they are left. Taking everything out and cleaning the bins will be quick and efficient if you’re not struggling to clean wicker baskets or cloth bins.

3. UTILIZE NEGATIVE SPACES

The worst feeling is having so much stuff and not having enough room to store everything. If you have unused vertical space above your machine, installing a multi-level shelving unit can help you utilize that space and spread out your laundry supplies. It can even allow you the room to store non-laundry items that need a home (like lightbulbs, reusable shopping bags, etc.) If you’re working out of a smaller laundry closet, utilizing over-the-door racks can create space for your storage needs where you might not have a shelving option. Under-the-sink is also an area that can house spray bottles and chemicals in clear bins or turntables.

4. DECANT YOUR DETERGENT PODS

While this step might seem like more work to begin with, it saves time in the long run! You can find the detergent easily because it has a permanent home; you can always see how much you have, which means you’re less likely to completely run out when you’re having a laundry emergency; and, it will always look nicer than having half-empty boxes stuffed on the shelves.
