Put Small Closets to Work
Have a closet on the small side with a not-so-small wardrobe? We feel you. We’ve seen this situation a lot and know there are lots of folks out there ready to throw in the towel on their small closet, but just like any other space in your home, there is a solution! Put your closet to work using these six tips!
Maximize vertical space
SO many closets have a single rod with a shelf above, which means there is a lot of wasted space. Adding shelves above doubles your usable space. Instead of piling sweaters 10 high and watching the whole stack fall over every time you grab one in the middle, you can use shelf dividers and baskets to contain your items. You can also add a second rod to create double hanging. If you are renting or want to do this in a more budget-friendly way, you can add a second rod like this.
Adding shoe storage
In small closets, shoe space is typically lacking. To maximize every inch of the space, you can add shoe organizers to the floor to make use of the space under your hanging clothes. Another option is to use clear shoe boxes. Putting shoes in clear boxes allows you to see what you have and they can be stacked to maximize the vertical space in the closet. We recommend clear shoe boxes for storing/switching out seasonal shoes and shoes that are not worn as often.
Use the real estate on the back of the door
Put your whole closet to work by using unexpected spaces like the back of the door. We love these over the door organizers because you can customize them for your needs. Baskets are great for scarves, clutches, and accessories. This is also a great solution for jewelry and shoes.
Use wall space
Blank walls are often the last place people think of because if something doesn’t already exist there (like a shelving unit of some kind) it can be hard to reimagine it. If the space is narrow and you can’t add shelves, use commercial command hooks to hang hats! This is a simple way to add style and function to your closet.
Store off season items elsewhere
A seasonal switch out might be necessary if you are limited on space in your everyday closet. If possible, store off-season clothes in a separate area. We recommend utilizing somewhere out of reach like a high shelf or another closet or potentially in off-site storage. You might think you’ll miss having easy access to these items but those rarely worn items have to go to make space for your current essentials.
Consider a new layout for the space
We often get stuck with looking at our closet the way it is, but a whole new layout could really change the functionality of your closet. It can be more of an investment, but in the end the closet is designed for your needs and creates a more functional space.
