6 Tips to Organizing Holiday Decor

The holiday season definitely brings chaos. If there is no system in place, setting up or putting away your holiday decorations can be a daunting task that takes away from this wonderful time of year. Use these tips to get organized to make the season bright again!

DECLUTTER

Pay attention to what you don’t use when unpacking this year - say goodbye to those unused or broken items. Don't keep putting stuff in storage that you're not using because it’s just taking up space! Your collection should only contain the most loved and adored items.

PACK BY ROOM

One way to pack is to separate and pack items by the end location- a box for the kitchen, a box for the living room, a box for the outdoor items, etc. This creates an easy system that allows you to set up each space with all the items that belong there without overthinking it! I like to use a large steel shelving unit for all of the bins that will be nicely packed up.

PACK BY ITEM TYPE

Another way to pack is to pack all like items together - a box of ornaments (using a container like this one), a box of indoor and outdoor lights, and a box of garlands. This makes finding what you need easy if you change up the location of the decor every year.

To store wreaths, here is a great double-stacking bag. It’s affordable and durable, allowing you to keep wreaths lying flat. Similarly, a tree bag is a great way to keep your tree in perfect shape from year to year!

COLOR-CODING

Try color-coding your boxes for the system you put in place. Maybe each location has a different colored lid. Maybe decor for each season has a different color bin -  I don’t know about you, but I have a TON of fall decor that needs its own category. Be creative and make a system that will allow you to easily find and put back items every year! I like to use an assortment of clear bins and red bins for holiday-specific decor.

DESCRIPTIVE LABELING

Make sure your labels are detailed so that you don’t have to open every single box to find what you need. If you use the same box for multiple items, make sure you include each item on the label. This will ease the stress of finding that needle in the haystack because the box with the needle will be labeled! Here is my tried and true label maker!

OVER-THE-DOOR RACKS

Take advantage of negative space and invest in an over-the-door rack for items, such as gift wrap, that would be easily be squished in storage boxes. These items can easily fit behind the door and can be accessed year-round for birthday presents or special occasions.
